I have been using this tent for solo backpacking for a few years now and after finally deciding to upgrade I figured I would right a short review. Really the only reason I'm purchasing a new Tarptent is because of weight and compactness.The Dakota 1 weighs in just over 3 pounds with the fly which by today's standards is heavy for a solo shelter (my new Tarptent is only 1.5 pounds). If you're not counting ounces and do not consider yourself a lightweight enthusiast then this shouldn't be a problem. Also, the Dakota comes with a stuff sack (not a compression) sack, and even when compressed is still rather bulky for a solo tent. Perfomance wise, I really dont' see many faults with it. I've had no problems with condensation or weather and it is pretty durable. It really is a nice, affordable solo shelter for those just starting out or on a budget. Very easy setup as well. Decent backpacking tent for the price, This review is from: Coleman Dakota 1 Backpacking Tent (Misc.) This is a decent tent for the cost. I've used it twice backpacking and it's worked well. On one trip I got rained on and found that there's a little mesh window in the rain fly underneath the guy wire flap, for ventilation. It would have been dry except for the wind that pushed a tiny amount of moisture through it. The only other problem is that it's hard to position the rain fly exactly on the tent and it uses cheap plastic buckles to secure it. If you use it for backpacking, buy a separate compression sack for the tent and rain fly then store the rods separately in your pack.Pros: Lightweight, Nothing has broken so far. Cons: Rain fly is hard to seat causing problems trying to enter the vestibule, tent stakes are cheap, tent has tendency to partially collapse during night. |
